Carl “Tinker” West*

Challenger Eastern Surfboards was founded in the fall of 1965 in Neptune, NJ by California transplant Carl “Tinker” West, who had come to the East Coast to take advantage of the growing surfboard market. Tinker was a craftsman, a true perfectionist and brilliant – he had earlier worked as a rocket scientist but had given it up to build surfboards. His boards were precision, traditional, true classics.

The Challenger Eastern factory was always open, and Tinker’s crew handled shaping, glassing, sanding, and glossing. Fiberglass nose and tail blocks were done there as well as fiberglass skateboards. Tinker, with his red hair, distinctive handlebar mustache, and straw hat was always the lead character. Jim “the Genius” Phillips to this day credits Tinker with making the skilled shaper he became under his tutelage.

Tinker, always the contrarian, was not a fan of the sixties wide nose rider design.  Looking at his boards from that era with riders like Dale Dobson, Jim Phillips, and East Coast stars like Mike Beschen and Mark Neustadter, it was apparent that Tinker’s was spot on in his design beliefs.

However, surfboard manufacturing was a sliver of Tinker’s incredible history. As an engineer and musician, this multi talent affected many people in other ways.  Most notably, Tinker was Bruce Springsteen’s first manager. He built a full sound stage right there in the Challenger factory for Bruce and the boys to practice. The two remained friends up to Tinker’s last days, and the Boss wrote a deeply personal and heartwarming eulogy to his lifelong friend, which he published on social media for all his millions of fans to read.

The legend of Tinker continues for so many who hold the memory of Challenger Eastern Surfboards. In many ways he helped define an era of New Jersey Surfing in the 60s. Tinker was Inducted into the New Jersey Surfing Hall of Fame in 2015.
